’Beura’ is a new Gaelic arts project by Orcadian filmmaker Gregor D. Sinclair of Scotica Film set to music by Lisa Robertson, a composer very familiar to Nordic Viola’s audiences through our On A Wing and A Prayer – Morvern project.
At the end of June, I was privileged to record Lisa’s score alongside fellow Nordic Viola musicians violinist Guera Crockett and cellist Laura Sergeant as well as friend and colleague Emma Lloyd (violin). Whilst this isn’t a Nordic Viola project per se, it’s very much in line with our work and Lisa’s score for the film was mysterious and enchanting in its depiction of the wild highland landscapes – a joy to play.
The tale of the Cailleach Bheur, the Celtic goddess of nature, storms and winter, is well known to many in the Gàidhealtachd (the Gaelic-speaking areas of Scotland). Said to have carved the mountains and glens with ice, and borne the islands like children on her back, the Cailleach disappeared long ago leaving us only with her song – a sad, cautionary tale. Combining the intense landscape visuals of Orcadian filmmaker Gregor D. Sinclair with a new musical work for string ensemble by celebrated Highland composer Lisa Robertson, as well as poetry and field recordings, ‘Beura’ is a live experience unlike any other.

The film will be screening at Edward House on Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow 4-5pm on 14th October as part of the Royal National Mòd Fringe Programme. It’s a free drop-in event. I can’t wait to see the finished film and hope to see some of you there!
